On 3rd of september Oemi became in heat. So we started the progesterontests early because we didn’t know how soon her ovulation would be. Our girl tested our patience.. Eventually, I could leave for Germany on 18th of september. At first it didn’t look well: Oemi needed time adjusting after a long car ride of four hours and she snapped at Nazar. But with a little patience she let him breed her (to the great relief of boss). On 19th of september, the second mating went a lot smoother because Oemi wasn’t that nervous anymore. And Nazar is really a gorgeous boy with a sweet and calm temperament. Now it’s the long wait for the echo..
On 11 october we took an ultrasound and it confirmed Oemi her pregnancy! She’s due 18 november. We are really happy :) Unfortunately I forgot to ask a picture. But within a few weeks we have to do another one to see if the pups develop well. I will try to remember then. Now Oemi can enjoy being pregnant. We already put the box in place so she can get used to it.
We are day 41 now and Oemi is doing really well. She sleeps a lot and loves cuddling with me even more. The walks are getting shorter because she tires easily.. And the belly is growing and growing :) The pictures were taken on day 36.
Around day 45, we took another ultrasound to see if the pups were developing well. What nice pics! At one time, two pups were seen lying nose to nose. Unfortunately we don’t have a picture from that. Everything looked fine!
The last days are weighing heavy on Oemi: the pups push against her stomac and diaphragm so she doesn’t have much appetite and has to cough sometimes. Walks have to be kept really short. She still gained 3,5 kg in the last week, so we expect about 9 or 10 pups. She also begins nesting in Nemo his bench but that’s a little small :p
On wednesday morning on 15th of November, Oemi her temerature dropped to 37°. Was it starting? A few hours later, it was 36,8, so yes, she was getting ready :) I kept a close eye on her the whole day, no more trips outside! But she felt very at ease, she slept continuously. It wasn’t before 18 o’clock that she became restless: walking around, nesting in the pillows,.. So I installed myself in the veranda with her, where her crate was. The restlessness lasted a whole night: I had to let her out every hour. It wasn’t until 4 o’clock that it got heavier for her: she was shaking and didn’t know what to do with herself. So I decided to wake Yolande because she wanted to see the first puppy being born. Unfortunately it didn’t come right away and she had to leave for work. Taking a leave wasn’t possible for her. So there I was alone, with a dog already a few hours in labour and two other dogs that were so curious about what was going on and were trying to get over the gate. Finally, at 8.15, I saw the first push!
The names for the pups were chosen by Yolande, she chose the theme composers :)
At exactly 8.30, there was our girl yellow without any problem! Immediately I see the colors of daddy Nazar: silver with a very light undercoat! Ofcourse I’m in love immediately! She weighed 476 grams and gained a lot of weight in the first days. First picture is day 1, second picture day 4.
At 9.05, puppy number 2 was there. Oemi didn’t have to push a lot. It was a black boy (collar white) with a birth weight of 452 grams. He has grown a lot too!
At 9.30 there was really quick puppy collar grey: a black boy with a birth weight of 418 grams. He likes to hide in moms long fur, the reason why I can’t take a lot of pictures of him. But here is a nice picture with one of his brothers on day 4.
Oemi pushed the boy with collar red easily out at 10.15, but we both had a lot of trouble to get him out of the membranes. At last we did it and I saw a black boy with a birth weight of 398 grams. I rubbed him and tried to let him drink but he refused. Rubbing a little more and taking the mucus out of his nose and I see a little bit more life in him. He started drinking too. The first days were a little wait and see because he didn’t gain as much weight as his siblings, but now he isn’t the runt of the litter anymore :)
Oemi was going fast: at 10.40 girl blue was born: black with a birth weight of 432 grams. She isn’t the loudest but she’s gaining weight as well :)
Our little fatso with collar purple was in a hurry to be born: only 20 minutes after his sister, he was there at 11. His birth weight was 532 grams, with that he was the biggest of them all. And he stayed that although he has a lot of competition from his sister with collar green. He will let you know when something isn’t right!
Oemi took a little break, she was exhausted because of all those births coming so quickly. A little after 12 I saw her starting to push again. When I looked, I saw two hind feet and the point of a tail: a breech. Normally no problem, but Oemi already broke the membranes and she wasn’t pushing anymore because she was tired. I waited a little to see if she would start again but no. So I took my sterile gloves and pulled at the feet with each contraction until I got a better grip. Eventually, at 12.20, our second gray girl was there with collar green. Ofcourse I had to remove some mucus but she was doing well with a birth weight of 504 grams. Now, she’s almost as big as her brother Akabuogu, but that isn’t surprising! Always eating, pushing brothers and sisters aside.
The boy with collar orange came a little by surprise. I was busy with one of the other pups in the crate and Oemi walked around in the kitchen. Suddenly lay there a black boy with a birth weight of 436 grams at 13.15. :)
I thougt Oemi was done after boy orange, I already called the vet to ask her to check Oemi and the pups. But at 16.10, there was a dark gray girl collar brown with a birth weight of 498 grams! 3 hours later! She was very active and loud. But she didn’t really gain weight, although she didn’t loose any either. She looked healthy, but she became a lot quieter by day 3. On day 4, suddenly she started to get better, just when I wanted to feed her. by hand. Moms milk is much better! Hopefully, she can keep this up!
Weeks 1 and 2 went a little with ups and downs: two days after the birth, I had to go to the vet with Oemi because she had a fever, was restless, wouldn’t stay with the pups for very long.. From the blood tests she saw that Oemi had an infection and was anemic. So Oemi got antibiotics and could eat red meat. She needed a second dose of antibiotics, but eventually the infection was gone. But from the meat, and the higher energy food she got a nasty persisting diarrhea. Again to the vet: medication, no more meat, a lower energy puppy food and probiotics. Hopefully it will change for the good now.
The pups are doing really well, they almost all doubled their birth weight after week 1. Just a bad case of cramps and a high due deworming at 2 weeks. The eyes are open and they are waggling really well in the crate :)
Such sweeties! They begin to walk around in the crate and try to climb out when the gate opens. Teasing each other is so much fun! Now that their eyes are open, they look at us and lick our hands. Oemi stays on her guard and doesn’t allow Nemo and Orfeo. In the second half of the week we tried to take out the crate but that wasn’t such a good idea: a lot of noise at night and Oemi wasn’t at ease. So crate back in for a little while.
They are becoming more active by the day, so, after a few trips at night, I took away the crate and put two large benches for them. They like it! Exploring the veranda is fun now. They had their first porridge and it tasted very well! The first visitors have come and the pups love the cuddling and attention :) In between, they sleep a lot. Orfeo and Nemo are allowed with the pups, although mom gives them an occasional warning that they have to be quiet. Especially Nemo enjoys the little rascals, his tail is almost wagging of from excitement. The grown ups could enjoy the snow, unfortunately the pups are still a little too small..
It’s going so fast, we’re already halfway! The pups are walking around in the veranda and playing a lot with each other and the uncles. Their first trip in the garden is a fact! They aren’t big heroes yet, only Azfar and Aka were really enjoying themselves and were playing with the big dogs. Luckily the second time was so much better! The buggy has arrived, so we can begin making little walks in the neighborhood. With a lot of noise at the moment.. Marina, thank you for the nice boy/girl sheep :)
Yo has a week vacation so we can divide the work with the pups a little more. Because they walk in the livingroom now, make little trips in the garden when the weather allows it, go for walks in the buggy..We celebrated Christmas eve with the pups and the big dogs :) Their characters are coming more and more visible. They love to play with each other and with Nemo! Neither at home nor in the garden is there anything safe for those little teeth. Luckily they also use the large bones from mom and uncles. The kibble goes in very well, although they drink a few times a day at the milkbar. At night they are really quiet without mom, but we have a lot of cleaning to do in the morning..
It was a very busy week for the gremlins: a visit from the vet for their first shots and chip. That hurts! Then there was litter control by LSOHV: everything was picobello. The pups were really brave on Newyearseve: I could easily distract them from the fireworks with some music and a hug. Later in the week I took them with me to my work (their first big car ride, auch my ears). There they played and cuddled with the girls and colleagues. Eventually, we had the tests to see which charactertraits the pups had with that strange man. The whole litter is very social and man orientated. So I’m a happy breeder :)
Taking pictures isn’t that easy with those wriggly pups! And they want to see what brother or sister is doing up there.. They are very active pups that play and fight a lot with each other, eat a lot, don’t sleep that much anymore.. I have to follow constantly to clean everything up. Mom is still feeding them once or twice a day but I think that she will be happy to see them go.
The pups left one by one, all to good owners! I allready heard everybody and they are all doing fine! So I’m very happy :)
